Annual Thanksgiving Training Camp: High Altitude Early Season Skiing

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We’re offering beginning, intermediate, and advanced skate and classic clinics, as well as clinics for women only and Masters racers. Our crew of renowned instructors includes experienced coach and Olympian Ingrid Butts, Olympian Rebecca Dussault, PSIA examiner Ross Matlock, Telluride instructors Steve Hindman and Debra Willits, and CBNC’s Director of Ski School, Toni Westerholm.  Plus, lunch will be offered to workshop participants for $10 at the Nordic Center each day. Participants will also have the chance to focus on overall fitness for skiing with Pilates instructor Kenny Marks and learn about waxing techniques with Fast Wax rep Brian Smith, Alley Loop and Grand Traverse champion. Round out the weekend by joining us Saturday night for Nordic Season Kick-Off Party, which includes great food, live music, award winning rum cocktails, and a silent auction.

Cancellation Policy: If cancelled within 14 days, half of clinic fee will be refunded.  If there is a medical emergency, proper proof of a doctor’s note will be required to obtain a full refund.

THURSDAY

Refresher Round Robin (Classic Only)

9:00 – 11:00 a.m. , $20

If registered for 3 clinics, it’s free. A great way to ease back into the season, especially if you haven’t been on snow yet! We’ll start with a casual ski followed by several stations to practice skills with expert techniques and drills. This fun and educational clinic is the perfect opportunity to meet the instructors and ski with other participants of all levels. This clinic will help instructors ensure you have registered for the most appropriate clinics, thus setting you up for success for the weekend. All camp participants are encouraged to join.

 

FRIDAY MORNING

Pilates

7:00 – 8:00 a.m., $10
This Nordic-specific class will focus on core muscle awareness, good posture, and spinal alignment. Kenny Marks, the owner of Western Pilates, will donate all proceeds to the CBNC. Minimum class size is 4, maximum is 12.   Instructor: Kenny Marks   All proceeds benefit Crested Butte Nordic.  PILATES MEETS AT WESTERN PILATES, 214 6TH STREET, IN THE ORE BUCKET COMMERCIAL BUILDING.

CLASSIC SKI WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED

9:00 – 11:30 a.m., Meet at CBNC at 8:45 a.m.   ALL CLINICS MEET AT THE NORDIC CENTER.

For Beginners

Never Ever Skied – For people without any sliding experience who are new to the sport and want to learn the basics of cross-country skiing.   Instructor: Robbie Johnson  Clinic is over.

Some Skiing Experience – For people who have been on cross-country or downhill skis before, but need to work on their balance and wish to develop the techniques to improve efficiency.   Instructor:  Rebecca Dussault  Clinic is over.

For Intermediates  (video analysis included with both workshops)

Find Your Kick Zone – Focus will be on one’s ability to generate forward momentum through efficient and powerful leg push-off (also called kick).   Instructor: Toni Westerholm  Clinic is over.

Body Position – Focus will be on establishing good body position for more efficient skiing.  We’ll look at pole push-off and leg push-off, the timing of poling/kicking, and the transitions between different techniques.   Instructor: Ross Matlock  Clinic is over.

For Advanced  (video analysis included with both workshops)

Timing & Transitions – This workshop will work on mastering the transitions between different techniques (striding, double-poling, and kick double-poling).   Instructor: Steve Hindman  Clinic is over.

Increase Your Glide – This workshop will work on creating more power through the push-off phase to extend your glide.   Instructor: Ginny Turner  Clinic is over.

Scott Krankkala will be the floating instructor between intermediate and advanced workshops to help students needing one on one.


LUNCH AT NORDIC CENTER, NOON, $10  
  Friday’s lunch will be an option of vegetarian or beef hearty stew, served with home made bread and an assortment of cookies made by private chef Josephine Kellett.  This meal is offered as a convenience to our skiers so that they may stay at the Nordic Center and mingle with other attendees.   In order to ensure we have enough great food, please purchase this ahead of time. 


FRIDAY AFTERNOON

SKATE SKI WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED

1:30 – 4:00 p.m., Meet at CBNC at 1:15 p.m.  ALL CLINICS MEET AT THE NORDIC CENTER.

For Beginners

Recreation – For those who want to use skate skiing for recreation. Learn to carry your fitness from biking/hiking to winter sports. Different gears for different terrain will be the focus.    Instructor: Ginny Turner  Clinic is over.

For Advanced  (video analysis included with both workshops)

Attack Hills – Learn to ski hills with power! This workshop will work on seamless transitions and flawless timing.  Instructor: Ingrid Butts  Clinic is over.

Mastering Techniques – This workshop will focus on refining the techniques (V1,V2, V2Alternate) for the appropriate terrain.    Instructor: Steve Hindman  Clinic is over.

Fast Wax Clinic

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Instructor: Brian Smith, AlleyLoop and Grand Traverse Winner.  This will take place at the Nordic Center   Cost: FREE

 

MOVIE NIGHT

7:00 p.m., Center for the Arts, $10
Skiing in the Shadow of Genghis Khan by Nils Larsen. In 2005, Nils Larsen, Dave Waag, and Naheed Henderson journeyed to the Altai Mountains of northwest China to document the indigenous use of skis.  They found a rich culture that still builds and uses skis in ways that date back to thousands of years. Additional adventures shorts will be shown, including Man On A Bike, Unicorn Sashimi, All I Can, and Dark Side of the Lens.   All proceeds benefit Crested Butte Nordic.   Buy in person at the door, Center for the Arts.


SATURDAY MORNING

CLASSIC SKI WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED

For Beginners

Easier Pace – This workshop will focus on the basics of classic cross-country at a slower pace. Great for skiers who are challenged with balancing on skis.    Instructor: Scott Krankkala   Clinic is over.

Athletic Quick Learner – For skiers new to the sport but who are starting to get the hang of it. Those returning from Day 1 will continue to refine the skills learned in earlier workshops.    Instructor: Toni Westerholm   Clinic is over.

For Intermediates (video analysis included)

Efficiency – Focus will be on creating efficient body position to assist in extending your glide.    Instructor: Ross Matlock  Clinic is over.

For Advanced (video analysis included)

Center of Mass – Focus is on driving the center of mass (hips & pelvis) forward in order to be more efficient with the techniques.    Instructor: Steve Hindman   Clinic is over.

For Women Only

Women’s Classic Techniques –This clinic will help you fine-tune your classic skiing technique and develop a more aggressive style. It is for women who are intermediate to advanced skiers – comfortable on their skis and want to step it up a notch.   Instructor: Ginny Turner   Clinic is over.

For Master Racers

Hills & Techniques – This workshop is for skiers who race several times a year and want to improve their technique, as well as their race fitness. Skiers will refine their technique and learn how to adapt different strategies for different course terrain. Steady double poling and uphill diagonal striding in classic is needed.   Instructor: Ingrid Butts   Clinic is over.

Robbie Johnson will be the floating instructor between intermediate and advanced workshops to help students needing one on one.

Finding Better Balance – This workshop will continue work on basic skate and V1.   Instructor: Robbie Johnson   Clinic is over.

Basic Skate – Skiers will work on better timing and a more efficient glide in V1 with a view to V2. For new skiers who are starting to get the hang of it and are ready to start learning new techniques.    Instructor: Toni Westerholm   Clinic is over.

For Intermediates (video analysis included)

Sources of Power – How do we create power and use it efficiently? Work will be on utilizing your poles harder or faster and the push off.    Instructor: Ross Matlock   Clinic is over.

For Advanced (video analysis included)

Rhythm & Tempo – This workshop will focus on learning the relationship between tempo and terrain.    Instructor: Ginny Turner    Clinic is over.

For Women Only

Women’s Skate Techniques – Come learn from one of the most expert skiers in the valley in an all-women’s setting. Skiers will fine-tune their skate skiing technique and develop a more aggressive style. This clinic is for women who are intermediate to advanced skiers – comfortable on their skis and ready to step it up a notch.    Instructor: Ingrid Butts   Clinic is over.

For Master Racers

Masters Race Skate  - This clinic is for master skiers who race several times a year and want to improve technique and race fitness. Proficiency in V1, V2 and V2-alternate is needed, as we will work to improve the use of these techniques in race situations. Nordic Season Kick off Party & Silent Auction
