Hut Rental

All hut bookings begin on November 1st.

TO RESERVE:

1. Check availability on calendars below.
2. Call CBNC at 970-349-1707  ext 3 with a credit card handy to reserve the hut.
3. Check-in at the CBNC to confirm your reservation and sign waivers, PRIOR to departure.
4. Check the CB Avalanche Center’s website for current avalanche conditions.

The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) in Gothic offers two huts for winter use. Both huts are available for skiers and snowshoers to enjoy a backcountry experience, and are booked through the Crested Butte Nordic Center (CBNC). The CBNC also offers Backcountry Tours, Guides and Equipment.

The Forest Queen Hut

The FOREST QUEEN HUT, in the historic mining town of Gothic, (elevation 9,500′), is rustic and cozy with a wood stove and sleeps up to 6 people. The hut has electricity, a refrigerator, a small propane stove/oven, cooking utensils, and outdoor toilet. There is no running water, but drinking water is available and firewood provided. Please chop all firewood outside. Bring food and bedding.

Cost for the Forest Queen is $18.00/person/per night and is only rented to a single party or group.

The Maroon Hut

The MAROON HUT, next to the Forest Queen, has raised the bar for backcountry living with a ground source heat pump for heating and hot water, electricity, a full blown kitchen with running water, and four bedrooms with beds for eight people.  There are an additional 4 cots, so the max capacity is 12 people. Bring food and bedding. Cost for the Maroon Hut is $217.00 and is not rented to multiple groups. There are beds for  people. The Nordic Center will keep your credit card information on file to insure the hut is not damaged during your use. Please be a courteous user of this beautiful facility so many can use it in the future.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel more than 14 days prior to the beginning of your trip, for any reason besides high/extreme avalanche hazard, you will be refunded the balance less a $5.00/per day cancellation fee. If you need to cancel, for any reason besides high/extreme avalanche hazard, within 14 days of the beginning or your trip there will be no refund, but you will have the option to rebook for free during the same winter season.  If you are canceling because the avalanche danger is high or extreme, you will receive a full refund or rebook the hut at no extra cost.

The huts are a 4-mile, one-way ski on moderate terrain. Depending on snow conditions, avalanche hazards DO exist so you MUST check the avy conditions with the Crested Butte Avalanche Center before departing; www.cbavalanchecenter.org. Users of the Gothic Huts should NOT ski into or out of Gothic during HIGH or EXTREME conditions.

Check in time is 2pm. Check out time is 10am.

Be sure you have received information on the exact location of the hut and be prepared for a variety of winter weather conditions. Bring along adequate equipment and food for your stay. Be prepared to “rough it” in case of emergency. We recommend bringing and knowing how to use avalanche beacons as the route passes several potential avalanche areas.
