View Availability Calendar

Welcome to winter in the high country! The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory’s (RMBL) Forest Queen Hut in Gothic is made available to the public in winter for skiers and snowshoers to enjoy a backcountry experience. The elevation of Gothic Townsite is 9,500 feet.

The Nordic Center books reservations for the Forest Queen Hut. The hut, in the historic mining town of Gothic, is rustic and cozy with a fully equipped kitchen and beds to sleep up to 7 people.

The hut also has electricity, a stove, refrigerator cooking utensils, outdoor toilets, and chopped wood for the wood stove. There is no running water, but drinking water is available.

Bring food and bedding.

The hut is a 4 mile one way ski trip on moderate terrain. Depending on snow conditions, there are sections of potential avalanche hazard. Reservations are required, please call us for availability. Click here for a link to the liability waiver or fact sheet

Cost: Per person $15.60/night

When you arrive at the hut you will find:

  • 5 gallons of water in a jug. (Additional water is available from the caretakers)
  • A wood stove for heating with plenty of firewood and a hatchet. Please chop wood outside!
  • A refrigerator and a stove
  • Outhouse with toilet paper
  • 5 beds and 2 cots for a 7 person maximum (Please bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad)
  • Pots, pans, dishes, matches and lighters

Check in time is 2pm. Check out time is 10am.

Be sure you have received information on the exact location of the hut and be prepared for a variety of winter weather conditions. Bring along adequate equipment and food for your stay. Be prepared to "rough it" in case of emergency. We recommend bringing and knowing how to use avalanche beacons as the route passes several potential avalanche areas.
If you have questions or need assistance, the caretakers live at the Rogers-Boggs cabin just south of the Forest Queen Hut. Since the hut is located at the RMBL where numerous research projects lie beneath the snow around the cabin, please respect the following restrictions and rules:
  • No dogs may accompany hut users. If you bring a dog, you will be sent home by the caretakers.
  • Be sure to take all of your trash home with you.
  • No hunting.
  • You may ski up valley on the Gothic Road or the Copper Creek trail, but please do not ski anywhere in the Gothic townsite except to and from your cabin.
  • Please do not build snowpits or snowcaves.
  • No snowmobiles in the Gothic drainage.
